The goal of the Psychiatry Residency program in Savannah is to train broad-based, well-qualified specialists in psychiatry to provide highly-effective, patient-centered, recovery-oriented, trauma-informed, evidence-based and cost-conscious patient-care across the full continuum of settings in a collaborative healthcare environment.

In affiliation with the Mercer University School of Medicine, Savannah campus, the program fosters collaboration between basic and clinical science, among medical specialties, and between academic medicine and community health care professionals.

Gateway and Mercer University School of Medicine seek to educate physicians and scientists to serve with competence, compassion and respect, making long-term contributions to science, medicine and our communities.

The program emphasizes education over service and provides training in a variety of community-based settings. These include outpatient community mental health and family medicine clinics, a 24-hour walk-in mental health crisis center, both acute and long term inpatient settings, teaching hospitals, and FQHC’s.

Electives are available in a variety of settings including Ft. Stewart and other coastal locations. Together these expose residents to all facets of modern-day psychiatry.

The program strives to foster an environment of learning and research to enable graduates to critically appraise available evidence and keep abreast in the evolving landscape of psychiatric practice while working collaboratively with the other providers of health care. The program aims to equip graduates with the necessary skills in systems understanding and management, health care finance and stakeholder collaboration to be effective change agents and community leaders.

The mission of the Sponsoring Institution, Gateway Community Service Board, is to be a leader in the provision of services for mental health, substance use disorders, and developmental disorders and disabilities for the people and communities it serves. A basic foundation to fulfilling that mission is the use of evidence based services and treatments to enable individuals, families and communities to improve their health and wellness, direct their own futures, and strive to reach their full potential.

Gateway is committed to inclusiveness through the recruitment of a diverse body of physicians, faculty, and staff, and seeks to produce physicians with the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and self-awareness required to practice highly effective, patient-centered, recovery-oriented, trauma-informed, evidence-based medicine.
